Description
Available from six-months to 2 years. Shorter periods will be considered. A 'security deposit' (bond) equivalent to two-weeks occupancy fee is required in advance.
All enquiries are welcome, but to be accepted you must first visit in person. (No remote applications will be accepted. )
Close to bus routes, shopping facilities (Cook Shops and Jamison Plaza), hospital (Calvary) and health services, AIS, University of Canberra, Belconnen Town Centre. ANU is 6 kms.
All facilities in the house are available to share with the owner and two other residents. Suit post-grad student or visiting staff member. Female friendly. Overseas students are welcome (past occupants, both men and women, have been from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, People's Republic of China, Japan, New Zealand and Australia). The resident owner is a retired astronomer and communications scientist who lives alone. (Presently, the house is shared with an Astronomy Postdoc from Japan, and a Computer Science Masters candidate from Kashmir — both male. )
The house has a lounge area (with slow combustion wood fire in winter) opening onto a rear deck. Spacious, well-equipped kitchen has large gas cooktop, electric oven, microwaves, freezer, separate refrigerators and pantry areas, and stylish recycled timber benches. The house is configured for economy, with productive organic vegetable garden, composting bins and a philosophy of "comfortable thrift". A single shared bathroom and toilet requires some mindfulness on the part of guests for the needs of others. As a special privilege (but not an entitlement), the resident owner vacuums the common areas of the house, attends to general up-keep etc, and maintains the fire in winter. The owner also cleans the toilet and bathroom on most occasions, although guests are expected to share this activity if required. Guests also are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their own rooms, as well as attending to their own food preparation, cooking and cleaning (and putting-away) of dishes and receptacles, and for the cleaning and maintenance of work areas; such as shared microwave oven, refrigerators, stove, sink and bench-space.
Guests share wifi StarLink internet access (unlimited data, typically 100Mbps download).
The accommodation arrangement is a Written Occupancy Agreement. This has been chosen over a formal rental agreement as it allows hassle-free coming and going and better matches people's changing needs. Further details regarding mutual obligations and responsibilities of 'occupants' and 'grantor' are spelled out in the Occupancy Agreement and the accompanying House Rules, in accordance with the ACT Residential Tenancies Act 1997 and subsequent legislation. (Applicants are referred to the Legal Aid Fact Sheet available at https://legalaidact.org.au/sites/default/files/files/publications/Occupancy_Agreements_02-03-2021.pdf)
